DESCRIPTION


You've been working hard toward your degree and now you desire to put that knowledge into action. The City of Pomona is an exceptional place for learning, doing impactful work, and obtaining real-life experience to help you better prepare for a career in government engineering. The Water Resources Department Voluntary Engineering Intern will be directly immersed and involved with the operations, maintenance and design of water and sewer infrastructure Citywide. There will be varied exposure to office, field and interagency facets of engineering. The intern will work directly with the Engineering team within the Water Resources Department, and be introduced to professional Operations staff. Intern shall work 10-20 hours per week.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS TO APPLY

Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

  • Current enrollment as a college/university junior, senior, or graduate student within Civil or Environmental Engineering

  • Students that have completed a survey and fluids course

  • Possession of a valid State of California driver's license

  • Available to volunteer a minimum of 10 hours per week

Work hours: 10-20 hours per week, flexible schedule but within City hours. The hours may be between Monday-Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.


Knowledge of: Windows based operating system, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, AutoCAD, ArcGIS


Abilities: The Engineering Intern provides assistance with: field data collection programs, land development compliance, compliance and permitting programs, data interpretation, and preparation of associated reports, tables, maps and figures. This will include any additional duties as required by City staff members.


Depending on their background and skill set, this individual may assist with researching and evaluating development impacts of projects and alternatives; preparing spreadsheets, graphs and drawings; regulatory compliance permitting and report preparation; and preparation of business development proposals and cost estimates. This individual may also assist with preparation of water/wastewater resource mapping using GIS skills, AutoCAD detail drawing generation, and perform site visits. Assignments may involve coordination with local agencies, site assessments, and infrastructure projects.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES


  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Should be personable, motivated and a self-starter capable of working both individually and as part of a team

  • Position requires strict adherence to health and safety procedures, attention to detail, good organization skills, outstanding work ethic, and a passion for high quality work products

  • Coordination with land developers, product vendors or local residents for an identified project
