Subject: CE/CEM Department Spring Semester Events 2020

Dear Students and Faculty,

In response to the developing situation of the coronavirus (COVID-19), we shall continue to monitor the situation with the University and the California State University (CSU) along with state and federal officials. Under the current direction and instruction from both campus administration at Cal Poly Pomona and the CSU, there are several immediate actions we must take for our spring semester events.

University and CSU Directives

  • Effective immediately, Cal Poly Pomona and our auxiliary organizations will suspend all international and non-essential domestic travel from now through May 31, 2020

  • March 13, through March 17, 2020: Campus is open but pausing all in-person classes

  • Cal Poly Pomona is promoting social distancing by canceling all events and gatherings with more than 100 participants, effective March 12, 2020, through May 31, 2020

    • This decision covers all events and gatherings, including, but not limited to: banquets, luncheons, receptions, dinner galas

  • It is important to emphasize that the campus will not be closed. Campus offices, buildings, and essential student services will remain open, including student housing and dining facilities

  • Official Cal Poly Pomona news releases can be found on the Health Alert website

CPP ASCE Student Chapter Response

Under current directives from the University, we are working with campus administration to assess the feasibility of various Spring Semester Events. While we will take every effort possible to keep events and programs in place that are so essential to our core mission, our members and our partners; we must cooperate with all University, CSU, state and federal regulations. We understand that this comes at a time especially important to our students and events that make our student chapter successful. We sincerely apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause due to event cancellations or rescheduling.

CPP ASCE Student Chapter Events

We are actively working to assess all events and determine if they need to be postponed, cancelled, undetermined or planned to be hosted/attended alternatively. Please refer to our website (cppasce.org) for the most up-to-date status of each event as more information becomes available.

All events have been given one of the following status classifications:

  • Alternative Host Method: Will be attended/hosted using conference calls

  • Paused/Undetermined: Waiting to review or additional action by the University

  • Postponed: Actively working to reschedule to next most convenient date

  • Cancelled: Event/Program cancelled due to being deemed “Non-Essential Gathering” by the CSU

Questions From Students

We understand that the uncertainty for future events can be distressing and intimidating; however, we ask for your continued patience through this rapidly developing situation. We anticipate that many of you will have questions that we may not have the answers to yet. We would like to assure you we are currently working on plans for all events and that they will be updated as soon as possible. We have launched a website page (cppasce.org/spring-events) that you can visit for answers to all your questions.

At this time of heightened anxiety and concern, we ask for your patience in addressing unanswered questions, as we are sure that there will be many. We are working diligently to assure that the most essential aspects of our student chapter are preserved during this development.

Thank you for your continued patience as we work collectively to keep our campus and our community safe and healthy. If there are any questions regarding upcoming events, please feel free to contact us at calpolypoomonaasce@gmail.com.

Best Regards,

Seema C. Shah-Fairbank, P.E., Ph.D.
